Mastering the "Adjustment Phase": Your GLP-1 Comfort Guide
Is it normal to feel wiped out or nauseous when starting a GLP-1 protocol? Learn how tactical lifestyle adjustments—like protein pacing, proper hydration, and targeted supplements—can help you smoothly navigate the initial adjustment phase.
One of the most common questions we get at Metabolic Flow is: "Is it normal to feel like this?"
When you start a GLP-1 journey, your body is undergoing a massive metabolic shift. While your results are the goal, the "adjustment phase" can sometimes bring unwanted side effects like nausea, fatigue, or a change in digestion.
The good news? Most of these are manageable with the right New Zealand-based toolkit. Here is how to handle the "Big Three":
1. Beating the Nausea
Nausea is often a sign that your digestion has slowed down (which is exactly how the medication works!).
- The Fix: Switch to "Protein Pacing." Instead of three big meals, aim for 5-6 tiny, high-protein snacks throughout the day.
- NZ Tip: Ginger tea or peppermint oil can be a lifesaver for settling the stomach between meals.
2. Fighting "GLP-1 Fatigue"
If you’re feeling wiped out, your body might be missing key electrolytes or B-vitamins.
- The Fix: Prioritise hydration. Aim for 2-3 litres of water a day, ideally with an added electrolyte tablet (available at most NZ pharmacies).
- Supplement Check: Refer back to our Supplement Guide to ensure you're getting enough B12 and Magnesium.
3. Managing Digestion Changes
Slower digestion can lead to constipation.
- The Fix: Fibre is your best friend. Aim for 5+ servings of leafy greens or a daily psyllium husk supplement.
- The Rule: If you haven't "moved" in 3 days, it’s time to consult your pharmacist or GP.
